Sensory Friendly Passport to Culture: Yokoso! A Japanese Culture Mix-Tape

September 18, 2022 @ 4:00 pm

Learn about Japanese culture through an interactive and engaging afternoon of performing arts. Featured Colorado-based artists from the Japanese Arts Network (JA-NE) include soprano and Koto player, Margaret Ozaki Graves, clarinetist Kevin Sakai, beats and words from MC 3Two aka Christopher Bennett, and taiko drummer Courtney Ozaki. Also featured in this program is a short film by Brooklyn-based director and filmmaker Bruce Tetsuya, visual artwork from illustrator Akemi Tsutsui-Kunitake, and various traditional Japanese folk music and dance.
Our SF programming presents performances in a relaxed, sensory-friendly way. Performers will modify shows to ensure there are no startling noises or visually over-stimulating components. Our team keeps sound levels lower than normal and keeps the lights in the audience higher than normal, ensuring audience members can see each other. Audience members are free to come and go if need be (there is always a “safe room” available) and are asked to wave hands rather than clapping.
