Every year we spend the month of May raising awareness of the challenges those with communication difficulties have and celebrating the speech therapists who help make their lives better. Speech Therapists (STs), also called Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs), play an integral role in the lives of many kiddos; from those who are first learning to talk to those who will be using sign language to communicate. They help kiddos share their desires with others and guide them to greater independence in the world.
Speech therapists use their expertise to increase our verbal skills. This may include helping us with stuttering, lisps, or other speech impediments. However, some kiddos will attend speech therapy to develop their non-verbal skills. This may include sign language or Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). You may have seen people who use electronics or laminated pictures to communicate. All of this is learned in conjunction with hard work and Speech Therapy. In this wonderful month of May, please reach out to a Speech Therapist you know and say thank you for all the hard work they do helping others.
If your kiddo is talking but you are struggling to understand them, is not trying to communicate with you, or if you have any other questions about how to support your kiddo’s growth and development reach out for an evaluation. Our therapists at Kid Physical have over 32 combined years experience offering specialized, holistic healthcare for children of all ages. Our top priority is providing support for both caregivers and children so that they can reach their highest potential.
